Summer 2017 Honors Session: May 22nd – June 22nd

~ Societal “ISMs” as Depicted Through Art ~

An Exploration of Theater, Film, and Photography

Through discourse and experiential learning students will explore how theater, film and photography have served as vehicles of expression for social and activist functions including addressing the issues of racism, ableism, sexisms, and classism.

Students will explore how these art forms depicted and influenced societal representation of these basic philosophical beliefs and served as an impetus for change.  In many cases, art reflected the collective values of a society that either embraced bigotry or worked against it.

Course and field work will allow students the opportunity to learn and reflect on how their own ideologies can be expressed in these various art forms.

During this five (5) week honor session, students will gain a better understanding of the intersection between art and culture that demonstrates the themes of, empowerment, self-expression, self-reflection and artistic practice.  These themes will be developed through academic study, self-reflection, and community engagement (on/off campus.)

This session will feature a 3-day, 2-night course related trip to Philadelphia focusing on the session’s thematic elements.
